Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. I usually tell students to free write first and then cobble together the structure that makes sense for their essay. A compelling application, which includes well-written, interesting essays gets someone into college.

Present a situation or quandary and show steps toward the solution. Avoid the urge to pen an ode to a beloved figure like Gandhi or Abraham Lincoln.

Admissions officers want insight into your thought process and the issues you grapple with, so explain how you became aware of the dilemma and how you tackled solving it. They have to be good.

Well, I have three main pieces of advice that I give every year: Use the topic that lets you be authentic in your writing.
